At the end of August 1956, Hermann Schröder (1928-2016), 28-year-old German architecture student visited the Säynätsalo Town Hall that had finished construction only a couple years prior. By then Alvar Aalto already was a world famous architect and immediately upon the completion of the Town Hall architects and students around the world started to travel to Finland to visit the building. During that time Schröder the student painted beautiful aquarelles and perspective drawings of the building on site in Säynätsalo.
During his studies and after graduation Hermann Schröder was especially interested in terrace and hillside houses. In the architectural office (Faller&Schröder) founded in 1965 together with Peter Faller, they undertook many interesting residential building projects in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Perhaps during their university years they even visited another famous Aalto building, the stepped terrace house of Kauttua. The stepped terrace house is but one example of Aalto’s desire to make a building part of the surrounding nature: the shape of the multi-story building follows the slope.
From 1975 to 1996, Hermann Schröder worked as a professor in the Technical University of Munich (Technische Universität München).
In May 2017, it was Professor Hans-Peter Hebensperger-Hüther ‘s turn to visit the Town Hall. He told us about his old university professor and the aquarelles done by him, and promised to look into the current whereabouts of the paintings upon his return to Germany. Turns out he’d managed to contact Schröder’s widow Gabriele Schröder who had gladly agreed to send us photos of the paintings to use. The magnificent proportions of the building and the way light reflects on different surfaces come across beautifully in the paintings. The pine trees that still surround the area have been included, too.
It’s wonderful to see, display and save our guests’ interpretations of the Town Hall for the future generations, whether they are quick sketches in our guestbook, contemplative drawings in a sketchbook or even modern social media posts. Today you don’t need to wait for 60 years for a wonderful piece of art to be put on display. Just using the hashtag #saynatsalotownhall on Instagram or other social media channels is enough.

Hermann Schröder (1928-2016) 28-vuotias saksalainen arkkitehtiopiskelija vieraili muutama vuosi aikaisemmin valmistuneella Säynätsalon Kunnantalolla elokuun lopulla 1956. Alvar Aalto oli tuolloin jo maailmankuulu arkkitehti ja välittömästi Kunnantalon valmistuttua arkkitehdit ja opiskelijat ympäri maailmaa alkoivat matkustaa tutustumaan rakennukseen. Opiskelija Schröder maalasi tuolloin paikan päällä Säynätsalossa taidokkaita akvarelleja ja perspektiivipiirroksia rakennuksesta.
Opiskeluaikoinaan ja valmistuttuaan Hermann Schröder oli erityisen kiinnostunut terassi- ja rinnetaloista. Yhdessä Peter Fallerin kanssa perustamassaan (1965) arkkitehtitoimistossa (Faller&Schröder) he tekivät mielenkiintoisia asuintaloprojekteja 60- ja 70-luvuilla. Lienevätkö opiskeluaikoinaan vierailleet myös toisella Aallon kuuluisalla rakennuksella, 1938 valmistuneella Kauttuan Terassitalolla? Terassitalo on yksi esimerkki Aallon halusta sijoittaa rakennus osaksi luontoa: monikerroksinen asuintalo mukailee rinnettä.
Hermann Schröder toimi 1975-1996 professorina Münchenin Teknisessä Yliopistossa (Technische Universität München).
Professori Hans-Peter Hebensperger-Hüther taasen vieraili Kunnantalolla toukokuussa 2017. Hän kertoi meille tästä oman opiskeluaikansa professorista ja myös hänen akvarelleistaan sekä lupasi kysellä kotimaahan palattuaan teosten nykyisestä olinpaikasta. Hän olikin saanut yhteyden professorin leskeen Gabriele Schröderiin ja hän oli ilomielin antanut luvan lähettää meille kuvat käyttöömme. Akvarelleista välittyy rakennuksen mittasuhteiden hienous sekä valon käyttäytyminen eri pinnoilla. Myös männyt, jotka edelleen kehystävät aluetta, ovat mukana akvarellissa.
On hienoa nähdä, laittaa näkyville ja talteen jälkipolville vieraiden näkemyksiä Kunnantalosta. Niin pikaisia vieraskirjan luonnoksia, mietteliäitä luonnoskirjapiirroksia kuin nykyaikaisia sosiaalisen median postauksiakin. Nykyisin ei tarvitse odottaa 60 vuotta, että hieno teos saadaan näkyville. Riittää kun käyttää vaikkapa Instagarmissa tunnistetta #saynatsalotownhall.
